GUIDE TO FILING HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

Definition

Each County Government gives certain exemptions to its citizens, which are applied against the property tax assessment to lower the real property tax bill.  The requirements for the Basic Homestead exemption are as follows:

1. You must own the property as your legal resident on January 1st of the year you are filing.

2. Filing is only required once, not every year

3. You must occupy the property as your principal residence

4. You must have all cars owned by you registered in the county where you are filing

5. You or your spouse cannot be claiming homestead in another city, county or state.

Notes:

a) Other Exemptions are available in some counties for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons

b) If applying by mail we suggest you send the application via certified mail.

c) If in the future you change the way title to the property is held U you must re-file homestead.

  1. My Property Tax Appeal says

    April 17, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Property taxes don’t move in lockstep with home values because local governments typically don’t measure values every year and some have limits on annual property-tax increases, That means your current property taxes might reflect your home’s value when the market was healthier. Property-tax adjustments lag behind changes in home prices by an average of three years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
